TREAT YOURSELF!

The season of what can be craziness is upon us. And, if you’re in Minnesota or anywhere upper Midwest, it can get a wee dreary out there as the days shorten and the temperatures drop.

And so, let's begin by preparing the way for what could be a stressful late Fall into the holiday season by focusing on the theme TREAT YOURSELF!

(Side Note: If you’re a “Parks and Rec” fan (I am!) you’ll know in exclamation points what I’m talking about when I say, “TREAT YOURSELF”!!  If you’ve never seen this show and could use a belly laugh, look it up on Netflix and ENJOY!)

Why? Because when we fill ourselves up, we have more to give. Period. And, that means more to give to those we love, to our inner circle of friends, and to those we meet out in the world. When we take better care of ourselves, it’s far easier to practice patience, kindness, forgiveness, and love.

Here are 10 of my favorite ways to make that happen:

1. REST!
I mean truly rest!  Take a break, get the sleep your mind/body/emotions/and spirit need to function at their highest level. Take a break from electronic devices. Even 5 minutes of “resting time” in your busy day can have lasting results. Just close your eyes and slow your breathing. Place a hand over your heart and one on your lower abdomen. Consciously slow your breath and feel your heart relax and slow down as well. AWWWWWWWWW.

2. BOOST YOUR NUTRITION!

This doesn’t have to be some big program that’s hard to stick to. Just pay attention to what you’re choosing. Check in with your body before you grab that quick snack or that convenient and oh so tempting sugary, empty calorie item calling your name. Even if you’re not perfect in this one, getting better at it and preparing for the day by throwing some nutritious foods in your pack will help! If you are working from home and/or mothering, stock your fridge with nutritious quick grabs. This will have a positive overall effect on your mood and stamina.

How many times do we encourage this in others or make sure our kids are eating well and yet don’t take the time to honor our bodies? I’m guilty of this, how are you doing?

3. FORGIVE YOURSELF FOR NOT DOING 1 AND 2 AND BEGIN AGAIN!

So you messed up? We all do. Just start again! You can, you know; and you’ll be modeling some great choices for those close to you.

4. GO OUTSIDE!

Mother Nature is a wonderful soother for the soul (and everything about us). When I was overwhelmed as a young mother of several high energy kiddos, a dear friend of mine gave me sage advice. She told me that when my kids’ nature got the best of me, to send them out to Mother Nature. Fighting turned into playing pretty quickly. This can be true for us as well. The things we are fighting inside seem to work themselves out when we get outside and walk, run, hike, bike, or just take a leisurely stroll - even just by sitting and taking in the sights and sounds. In fact, in some places around the world, they call this “Forest Bathing” and you can get a prescription from your physician for it. Interested in learning more about Forest Bathing, click here:

5. DANCE!  ENJOY MUSIC!

You can have a dance party all by yourself. Yes, you can! Turn that music up and move that body!  Did you forget how much you loved to dance?

If you think you’re not one for dancing, just try a bit of swaying to some soft music with your eyes closed and see what beautiful effect this has on your mood. C’mon now. It’s good for the soul!  Besides, when’s the last time you allowed yourself this freedom?

Rediscover music! Go see a live show. Search out new music. Try a new genre of music. Be curious about what’s out there. If you have teens, ask what they’re into - you might be surprised and you might like it! (Certainly livens up riding in the car together!)

6. CREATE!

When was the last time you played with Colors, Textures, etc.? Here are some ideas:

Cook up a storm!  Head down to your local Farmers Market or to your favorite grocer and take in the produce section in a way you may have never experienced before. Experience the colors, observe the different textures, smell the herbs and spices, get up close and have an all-out sensual experience. Then go home and play around with your purchases - taste and experience your creation in the making!

Be a photographer! Do you think you don’t have an eye for photography? Who’s judging? Look around your environment and start snapping photos of everything you find interesting, amazing, intriguing, unusual, beautiful, unique…. You know - all these things that exist around you that you don’t really “SEE”. See them. Be curious about them. Snap their pic and have fun putting them into a collage or just keep them on your phone for a time when you need a quick boost.

Paint that picture, Create that collage, Knit that scarf, Crochet, Decoupage, Whatever pulls at you in a creative way, Do it!  Experience this creative side of you that stays hidden away. Time to take it out. It’s time to Play!

7. WRITE!  (deserves its own category as a creative expression)

You have stories, poems, musings, reflections, notes, etc. inside of you just waiting for the light of day. You don’t need to put this off until you have “The Time”. William Carlos Williams wrote all of his poetry between his patients, Tom Hennen wrote his glorious poetry on tiny scraps of paper he kept in his pocket while out in the wetlands of MN working for the DNR, Isabel Allende wrote some of her most famous novels - stealing bits of time to sit at a tiny kitchen table while raising her young children. You can do it too! No one has to read it. First and foremost, it’s YOU! Get that stuff out! If so moved, share it with others.

8. LUXURIATE IN A SCENTED BATH OR TAKE A LONG, LEISURELY SHOWER!

Okay - I am into water conservation, however sometimes, you need to slow your body/mind/soul down with a tub of water. It’s healing properties are magical. And, while you’re there, turn the lights down low, throw in some epsom salts (perhaps with soothing lavender) and light a candle. Ooooooooooooo. Awwwwwwwwww.

9. SCHEDULE A DATE WITH A LOVED ONE! (SPOUSE, S/O, FRIEND)

No agenda allowed. Go somewhere with some beauty and quiet.  Practice being heart centered and fully present with each other. Let the conversation drift and meander. You’ll be amazed how soul nourishing, refreshing, soothing, and bonding this can be. Then plan to continue this on a regular basis : )

10. MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL, TO THINE OWN SELF BE TRUE!

Be kind and loving to yourself and practice saying “yes” where there is a true yes - a yes that comes from deep inside - unencumbered by “shoulds or supposed tos”. Say “NO” to the rest. This is about YOU.
